Dating jensen speakers
Dating Fender Tube Amps by Serial Number, Part I by Greg Gagliano Copyright 1997, 20th Century Guitar Magazine. Well, we'll get to good parts, but first a little background information is in order. After reading Teagle and Sprung's excellent Fender amp book, I took them up on their challenge that maybe someday someone will compile enough serial numbers so that Fender amps can be dated that way. I contacted several Fenders collectors and dealers who were kind enough to supply me with data.In a BF Vibrolux Reverbs you could have either Jensen, CTS or Oxford, the BF Super Reverbs had Jensen, CTS, Oxford or sometimes JBL, the BF Pro Reverb had Jensen, Oxford or Utah, .In the silverface era Eminence, Oxford, Utah and Rola were more often used and Jensen was phased out.
This would tell me that the L stands for the years 2001, and the O stands for a month 3 months past December. The code follows the format: XXXYYZZ, where: ***** = a two or three digit number (possibly four on newer amps) indicating the manufacturer.(refer to the chart shown below) YY = is a one or two digit code indicating the year of manufacture. If it's a one-digit number you need to determine the correct decade of the amp some other way.Hopefully, some people that were close to the companies, or have more information to share will find this page, get in touch, and help further these stories.Speakers companies are particularly interesting to me.
